Sometimes there were encounters that were more difficult to comprehend. Not grand and impressive, but subtle, almost elusive. <\/p>\n

To make you curious \u2014 we saw a special organism: a salp.<\/p>\n

Salp (Salpidae)<\/strong>
\nIn a Greek port I saw something I couldn’t draw.<\/p>\n

A transparent body, propelled by small, repeated pulses.
\nAlmost a meter long \u2014 and yet hardly present.<\/p>\n

Only later did I find a name: salp<\/em>.
\nA barrel-shaped marine animal that is rarely alone, but often connected in long chains. What I saw was probably just one fragment. <\/p>\n

It had something caterpillar-like. Small reddish accents lit up with every movement, like beads on a string.
\nIt moved slowly\u2014circling, then straight on again\u2014harmless and almost careless, as if it didn’t have to go anywhere. <\/p>\n

Sometimes they appear en masse, I read later, and such chains can grow meters long.<\/p>\n

What I saw was only a glimpse.<\/p>\n

And yet it stuck.<\/p>\n
